Peace andemonium broke out at Ijesha bustop along the Mile 2-Apapa expressway this morning after a Petroleum Tanker driver identified as Salisu Sani, was allegedly killed by police and LASTMA officials. According to twitter user, Lanre Neville who was at the scene of the incident, eyewitnesses told him that trouble started when the deceased parked his vehicle along the road to say his prayers as a Muslim. China deal: We should not condemn Buhari, Nigeria needs help – APGA chairman

Image
Dr Victor Oye, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), says the country’s economic partnership with China is in Nigeria’s best interest. Oye stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday. He said that many countries of the world had started showing interest in China because of the vast opportunities it held and because of the economic giant it had become.   “No man is an island. We need to continue to work together and explore all means to make this country move forward and I think that’s what the President has done. “He went to China to explore new avenues and new opportunities in the global market and nobody should tell me that we will continue to face a particular direction in the development of this country. “He wouldn’t have entered into an agreement that would imperil Nigeria’s interest. He would not do that; am sure about that.” Oye called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to e

Polytechnic staff accuses FG of breaching pact, hints nationwide strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has warned of impending crisis in Nigerian polytechnics over failure by the Federal Government to abide by the agreement reached with the union. ASUP’s President, Mr Usman Dutse, who briefed newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, said several attempts to discuss the issues with the present government failed. According to him, issues between Federal Government and ASUP have lingered for years.   He said that the union was aware that the present government came to power about one year ago, adding, however, that government was a continuum. “Our expectation was that the re-constitution of the Federal Executive Council by Mr President will nip the issues in the bud, considering the quality of the appointees and the magnitude of the problems at hand. “Our hope in this direction is gradually fading away as no concrete step has been taken to address the issues; our attempts to meet government officials and to explain the urgency of the demand

Fulani herdsmen attacks: Igbo leaders sold us to APC – IPOB

Image
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has lambasted South East governors and political leaders “for trading off Ndigbo for personal and selfish interest.” The group claimed that by hanging around the All Progressives Congress, APC, led Federal Government, the governors were doing so at the detriment of their Igbo brothers and sisters. IPOB in a statement by its Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Emma Powerful, claimed that South East governors and politicians, members and non members of APC had so much compromised themselves or kept quiet for one political favour or the other.   It said the development had made them to turn blind to the killings in Igbo land by Fulani herdsmen. According to the statement: “The first attack by Fulani herdsmen in Enugu state that resulted to the arrest of over 76 persons who were searching for the whereabouts of their loved ones after the attack, and their subsequent arrest by the security agents, particularly the police and detaining them

Fuel scarcity: CNPP, Labour threaten to shut down NNPC Towers

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to end ongoing scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit cross the country or face its wrath. They said they would occupy the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) until the minister resigned. National chairman of CNPP and former Kaduna State governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa and the secretary general, Chief Willy Ezugwu, said yesterday in Abuja in a statement that both the minister and minister of state for Petroleum Resources had shown a track record of monumental failure in ending the fuel scarcity in the last 11 months.   “While the minister of state for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has kept double talking on the issue, the minister and President, Muhammadu Buhari on his part has maintained relative silence. “About seven months ago, Kachikwu had confessed: ‘Person

Herdsmen attack: Senate expresses concern, calls for caution to avert anarchy

Image
The Senate on Thursday expressed grave concern at the incessant attacks by herdsmen across the country with a warning that, if the ugly trend was not nipped in the bud, it would turn out to be as deadly as Boko Haram insurgency. The motion which was raised through matters of urgent National interest by Senator Chukwuka Utazi representing Enugu North Senatorial District, condemned unprovoked attacks on some communities in Enugu North on Monday where scores were left dead.   “Mr President, Distinguished Colleagues, you will recall that on Monday about the wee hours, Fulani herdsmen attacked and maimed the most vulnerable people in Uzo Uwani in Enugu North Senatorial District and I want the Senate to take action,” he submitted. Reacting to the motion, Senator Isah Misau ‘(Bauchi Central) Senatorial District explained that the inadequate presence of the Nigeria Police in rural areas was an issue to be addressed if insecurity was to be tackled. Misau said the number of Police

PDP Crisis Keep Rising as BoT members, National Caucus Boycott NEC Meeting

Image
The ongoing crisis tearing the Peoples Democratic Party apart worsened yesterday as majority members of its Board of Trustees, National Caucus and others boycotted its National Executive Committee meeting, which was held in Abuja. The development was said to have been fuelled by the decision of the national leadership of the party to hold NEC meeting without following due process, Punch reports. Before now, NEC meeting is held after both the BoT and the National Caucus of the party must have met and agreed on a particular date.   However, the National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff, was said to have deliberately refused to call for the meetings of the two organs of the party before he hurriedly convened the NEC meeting. It was gathered that Sheriff decided not to allow the two meetings to hold because of the resolve of their members to oppose the recommendation of the zoning committee. Earlier in the day, a member of the BoT from the North-East, had called the

Harry Redknapp to be reportedly named new Super Eagles coach

Currently, Salisu Yusuf is the interim coach of the Nigerian national team and will take charge of the two upcoming friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg. Yusuf stepped in after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), decided not to continue with Samson Siasia, who was given the job on a temporary basis following Sunday Oliseh’s shock resignation in February this year.   Daily Star claims that Redknapp, who was once tipped to become England coach, will now take the job on a permanent basis. 69-year-old Redknapp recently ended a two-match deal with Jordan’s national team.

Mercy Aigbe's Response to fans on Police Arrest Case in Oshogbo

Image
Morning fans, it has come to my attention that news has been flying around that I was arrested by the police in Oshogbo.... for the records I was never ARRESTED! I was shooting a movie in Oshogbo and was going for a break with my PA and driver when we saw a police van chasing us, they later double crossed us to come down. I was shocked and scared because I didn't know what was going on. I stepped out of the car to ask them what happened and why they double cross us in that manner, the policemen started shouting and acting crazy pointing his gun at me. On seeing his behaviour I took out my phone and started to record them, one of them forcefully collected my phone from me. My PA also started recording them with an ipad and the policeman slapped her and threw the ipad away. At this point a lot of crowd had already gathered when they saw me and what was happening and they started booing them, saying that is how Oshogbo policemen harass innocent citizens. When the policemen saw the

Again, nationwide power generation drops by 1,585.7MW

Total power generated by Nigeria’s power stations for transmission and distribution to homes has again dropped by 1,585.7 megawatts (MW) from 3,701.7MW that was achieved as peak generation last Monday evening, THISDAY has learnt. THISDAY gathered from the daily generation report of the Nigerian System Operator which was published yesterday that as at 6a.m. on Tuesday, the country only had 2,116.0MW to transmit to the 11 distribution companies (Disco) for onward distribution to homes and offices. The report also showed that there was a time on Monday that just about 301.3MW was generated into the system. This, a Disco source said, was because of a partial system collapse which was recorded in the evening last Monday. The source also stated that generation gradually began to come up early yesterday morning. It was also learnt that the Abuja Disco, for instance, had only 135MW to distribute in the morning, some increase from about 50MW that was given to it last Monday. The source

Senate has had too much distractions in the last 10 months – Senator Omoworare

Image
Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Babajide Omoworare has expressed regrets over what he called too much distractions in the Senate, saying it was affecting its day to day constitutional responsibilities. Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja, the Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District attributed it to the controversial inauguration of the current Senate on 9th June last year, which he noted, had continued to negatively affect businesses of the Senate compared to that of the House of Representatives. “Of course, you recalled that on 9th June last year, we had a tumultuous start and that of House of Representatives was a bit better, and this has been affecting the output of the Senate compared to that of the House”, he asserted.   He was emphatic that there were steady distractions, to the extent that bills were pending in first, second and third readings, and even at Committee level. He said he was doing all he could to pressurize appropr

You can’t stop FG’s work on Lagos-Ibadan expressway – Court tells Bi-Courtney

Image
A Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed an injunction sought by Bi-Courtney Highway Services Ltd seeking to restrain the Federal Government to stop further action on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following the termination of a concession agreement with the firm. The court found the preliminary objection of the Attorney General of the Federation dated Nov. 16, 2015 challenging the jurisdiction to hear and determine the case as “meritorious’’. Justice Ibrahim Buba made the order in a ruling obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.   He dismissed Bi-Courtney’s bid to procure an injunction thereby giving the government the nod to go ahead with the reconstruction plan for the expressway. Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration had terminated the concession agreement with Bi-Courtney and subsequently got financiers including the Infrastructure Bank for the project which was handled by Julius Berger Plc and RCC. Meanwhile, the Minister of Works

Disqualification of CCT chairman from Saraki’s trial: Tribunal delivers ruling Thursday

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) will on Thursday, April 28, deliver its ruling on an application filed by Senate President Bukola Saraki, seeking disqualification of CCT chairman from presiding over his trial. The tribunal fixed ruling for April 28, after listening to the submissions of counsel. Saraki had accused the chairman of the tribunal Justice Umar Danladi, of bias and insisted that he cannot get justice under his chairmanship.   Counsel to Saraki, Mr Raphael Oluyede, told the tribunal that the continued presence of Danladi on the panel offended the provisions of Section 36(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Oluyede claimed that since the EFCC is largely responsible for the trial and investigation of the N10 million bribery allegations against the chairman, there is no way the chairman will be objective and impartial in the case. He asked the chairman to disqualify himself from further entertaining the matter. In his argument, the pros

Nigeria may lose status as 4th world’s largest LNG exporter

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria LNG Limited, Mr. Babs Omotowa, has raised the alarm on Nigeria’s dwindling investments in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), saying that with no new investments, the country would possibly drop from her current position of 4th world’s largest exporter of LNG to 10th position by 2020. Citing the data on the global exports of LNG in 2014, Omotowa said Nigeria was ahead of other world LNG giants, including Indonesia, Trinidad, Algeria, Russia, Oman, Yemen, Brunei, UAE, Peru, Equatorial Guinea, Norway, Papua New Guinea, US, Egypt and Angola. FG considering options on how to certify, tap iron ore deposits

The federal government is set to tap the vast potentials of iron ore in the country, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has stated. He said earlier on Tuesday in Ilorin that the federal government “is well aware of this issue and is currently looking at options to solve the challenge, including synergising government capacity and private sector competencies for certifying existing deposits.” Noting that steel was the world’s most important engineering material, the Vice President restated the Buhari presidency’s determination to bring about a faster industrialization process in the country through the active development of the steel sector.   According to the Vice President, Nigeria has about 2 billion metric tonnes of iron ore reserve, adding “we must be extremely ambitious in our industrialization efforts”. He explained further that the need for increased levels of investment in Nigeria, “has never been more crucial than at this period in time.” Disclosing this
