What started off as a wonderful day turned into a scary one. For those of you that have seen the news or been on social media that was my son that fell in the gorilla exhibit at the zoo. God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him. My son is safe and was able to walk away with a concussion and a few scrapes... no broken bones or internal injuries. As a society we are quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off of their child and if anyone knows me I keep a tight watch on m

Group urges Buhari’s administration to sustain robust education policy

Image
The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has described the educational policy of the present administration in the last one year as dynamic and robust despite economic hardship being experienced in the country, saying, it should be sustained. The group pointed out that Buhari’s administration had a good outing in the education sector in its one year in office, saying the government was able to largely avoid the prolonged shutdown that traditionally plague administrations in their first years. A statement by CESJET Executive Secretary, Comrade Ikpa Isaac and made available to DAILY POST in Abuja, noted that relative stability was maintained in the education sector despite the economic hardship that has limited government’s ability to implement projects. The statement noted that it was with sense of responsibility that Nigerians saw government exhibiting capacity to gauge public opinion and respond accordingly. “The Education Minister, Mallam A

No evidence of corruption against any APC ex-office holder – Sagay

Image
Head of President Mohammadu Buhari’s Committee on Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, said yesterday that governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike deliberately set up an investigative panel to probe his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, and subsequently issued a white panel on the probe in order to hinder him from being appointed a minister. Amaechi is now Transportation Minister and represents Rivers State in the Federal Executive Council, FEC. Sagay further disclosed that in the next six months, all corruption cases in court will be concluded. He was speaking on a television programme titled, “Assessing the government,” on Sunday. When asked why current members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, formerly in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were not being persecuted, he said, “If anybody has any evidence against any APC members, suspected to have looted public fund should come forward and report such a politician, assuring that investigation would commence.” He

Army explains why it attacked protesting MASSOB, IPOB members

Image
The Nigerian Army has explained that its troops, alongside other security agencies, invoked the extant Rules of Engagement by acting in self-defence as well as in defence of lives and property when it shot dead about five members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Monday. The pro-Biafra activists were killed as they marched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Biafra Republic by late leader of the old Eastern region, Odumegwu Ojukwu, but the Army claimed that the MASSOB and IPOB members launched an attack on peace loving populace as well as security agencies while marking the first anniversary of the democratically elected government of President Muhammadu Buhari. This was contained in a statement signed by Colonel HA Gambo, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, which stressed that the major objective of the se

Ondo has no land for grazing reserves – Mimiko

Image
The Ondo state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has declared that his administration would not support the establishment of grazing reserve areas in the state, asserting that the proposed grazing reserves issue does not align with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended. He spoke in Akure, the state capital, during a public lecture at the weekend organized by members of Pan-Yoruba socio- political group, Afenifere, to mark the 90th birthday of their leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. Mimiko stated that the grazing reserves bill might not see the light of the day because the nation’s constitution empowers state governors to allocate land or revoke same. He lamented that while there had been several calls on the need to amicably resolve clashes between landowners and herders so that it does not degenerate into what can cause serious crisis, the more the calls were coming, the more fresh crises are caused by people from a section of the countr

FG’s diversification initiatives will strengthen economy – DMO

The Director-General Debt Management Office (DMO), Dr. Abraham Nwankwo has said that efforts by the federal government to revitalising the agriculture, solid minerals and manufacturing sectors as well as widen the tax base would have massive impact on the economy in the next three to five years. The DMO boss also expressed optimism the policy direction of the government would help strengthen the naira as well as the country’s foreign exchange. Speaking at a breakfast meeting with members of Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) in Lagos at the weekend, Nwankwo said with government’s diversification project in full gear, Nigeria’s economic growth and development will no longer be influenced by activities in the international crude oil market. He said a lot of revenues would be derived from taxation going forward, adding that the country’s low comparative tax revenue to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio, which stands at about seven per cent, as against 18 per cent a

What killed Abacha also killed Abiola, I have video evidence against Yoruba people – Al-Mustapha

Image
A former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, Monday, said he would soon open up on what actually killed his boss and the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Bashorun MKO Abiola. Al-Mustapha said he would unveil the untold story of how the duo died in his new book, Mustapha’s Memoirs, which, according to him, is still being worked on. Al-Mustapha, who addressed journalists in Lagos yesterday, said one thing killed his boss and the late MKO. He said: “For instance, when Chief MKO Abiola was in prison, many notable Nigerians visited him. They will visit him in the morning, and when they come back to the Villa in the evening to see Abacha, they would say a different thing entirely. “Unknown to these notable Nigerians, particularly notable Yoruba personalities, who visited Abiola, their visits were recorded on video. I did the video recording without their knowledge. “Th

I pity Lai Mohammed – Buhari

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed pity for the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who has to painstakingly explain all government’s policies to Nigerians. Speaking yesterday in Abuja, the President said he and his Ministers were working round the clock to deliver promises he made during the electioneering campaign. Buhari said, “One of the men I pity is Lai Mohammed. Everyday he is on TV explaining our performance or lack of it.   “The ministers sit down day and night to work. Some of them have literarily lost weight because they were sleeping less and eating less (while working on the budget). They were working on every kobo to be spent. “We recently just found out that we are poor because we don’t have anything to fall back to. This is the condition we found ourselves and this change mantra had to go through hell up till yesterday. “And for you to talk to whoever came to visit us throughout that year, I wonder how each of y

PDP needs Sheriff, Governors begging him to withdraw suit – Taraba Governor

Image
Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku has disclosed that PDP governors are begging the ousted chairman of the party, Senator Ali Madu Sheriff, to withdraw the court case he instituted challenging his removal. Ishaku told newsmen in Jalingo yesterday that Sheriff had done his best for the party and deserved to be honoured. Ishaku recalled that he and the governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, endorsed Sheriff as the only candidate for the party’s chairmanship from North-East. He said they, however, changed their mind at the party’s national convention held in Port Harcourt, when Sheriff was rejected by 10 out of 12 governors. “It’s only myself and Dankwambo that supported Sheriff at the convention and we have no option than to allow the voice of the majority to prevail,” Ishaku said. He said the only solution was for Sheriff to withdraw his suit from the court, complaining that the treatment Sheriff got was not proper as he did his best for PDP. ‘‘W

Ben Bruce barred from greeting Buhari in Presidential Villa

Image
The senator representing Bayelsa East Senatorial district, Ben Murray Bruce has revealed how he was barred from exchanging pleasantries with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa on Monday by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). Bruce said he had joined his colleagues to a dinner to mark the 2016 democracy day, but was not allowed access to the president, unlike other senators who were allowed to meet with Buhari. “I was at the Presidential villa today. Went to the President’s table. DSS wouldn’t allow me greet him but let another Senator greet him,” he tweeted.   “My critics say I shouldn’t criticize the president openly, so I go and meet him one on one and I’m blocked. Am I not a Nigerian citizen? “If PMB’s handlers selectively block access to him, he runs the risk of being surrounded only by sycophants! “I have nothing against the President; however, nobody is too important not to be criticized and my mouth will never be sile

Fayose’s statement on Fulani herders divisive, unbefitting – Bauchi Governor

Image
Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, yesterday, reacted to the statement credited to his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayo Fayose, asking Fulani herdsmen to leave Ekiti in response to incessant clashes between farmers and cattle herders suspected to be Fulanis, saying it is as condemnable as the crises between the farmers and herders. While acknowledging that the nation’s economy is being threatened by myriads of problems, such as the unending feud between farmers and herders in different parts of the country, he declared that the remark by Fayose is unbefitting of ‘national leaders, especially state governors.’ The Governor, who is worried that the country has not been able to find lasting solutions to such clashes that have resulted in the death of hundreds of Nigerians, regretted that instead of dialoguing with all stakeholders to address the ugly trend, some leaders were resorting to making divisive public pronouncements.   “In a democracy, provisions have be

Herdsmen attack: I no longer have ancestral home – Governor Ortom laments

Image
Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom yesterday stated that his home town has been sacked by suspected Fulani cattle rearers. He added that over 50 of his kinsmen had been killed with over 200 hectares of his rice farm razed. The Governor cried out that the destructive activities of the herdsmen in the state had created a 25-year backwardness in the state. Ortom was speaking when he received the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, who paid him condolence visit over the invasion of Agatu and other parts of Benue by the herdsmen. He said, “The mercenaries invaded my village, killed over 50 persons and destroyed over 200 hectares of my rice farm. “As I am sitting here, I have no ancestral home. “They killed children, old men and women in my community. “The mercenaries come to Benue not just to graze but to steal, kill and destroy the livelihood of the agrarian people, after which they take possession of the

Married man murdered mistress for turning down marriage proposal

Image
An Ilorin Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kwara state on Thursday remanded in prison one Ogundele David who allegedly killed his lover, Miss Tosin Ashinwo. David, a teacher at the Landmark University Secondary School, Omu-Aran, was said to have killed his 30-year-old lover after she turned down his marriage proposal. According to the police report, the accused was at Ashinwo’s residence at Tanke, Ilorin, where he met the mother of the deceased, Abiola, 65, and made effort to convince the deceased and her mother to accept his marriage proposal. The deceased was said to have refused the marriage proposal on the basis that David was a married man; however, the refusal of the marriage proposal infuriated the accused, who ran into the kitchen, picked a knife and allegedly stabbed Ashinowo to death. The police report also stated that the rejected suitor was also said to have stabbed Abiola all over her body till she fell into a coma, adding that the victim’s mother was rec

No other club has the mystique and romance of Manchester United – Mourinho

Image
Manchester United have officially unveiled Jose Mourinho as their new manager. The Portuguese replaces former mentor, Louis van Gaal, who was sacked two days after winning the FA Cup. Mourinho, who has been out of work since December, signed a three-year contract with an option to stay at the Old Trafford club until at least 2020. Announcing the appointment, United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward said: “José is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here. “I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward.” On his part, Mourinho said: “To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club c

Buhari felicitates with Soun of Ogbomoso at 90

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina. According to the statement, Buhari joins the Oyo State Government, Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Ogbomoso Kingdom and the family of the Soun of Ogbomoso in celebrating the long life and remarkable achievements of the revered royal father. “Looking into the pedigree of the nonagenarian from birth in 1926, his success in business and ascension to the throne, the President believes that the steps of the Kabiyesi were ordered from above to bring succour to his people and serve humanity in general,” the statement said. Buhari noted that the Soun of Ogbomoso, who has spent 42 years on the throne of his fathers, deserved commendation for his passion for peaceful co-existence, education and entreprene

Over 19,000 projects abandoned in the country – Emeka Eze tells Senate

Image
The immediate past Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, Emeka Eze, yesterday, told the Senate that about 19,000 government projects are currently abandoned across the country He pointed out that aside duplication of office buildings, personnel and overhead cost, there was the tendency for agencies of government to assert their authority in the procurement process. Eze, who was speaking at a one- day public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Procurement to amend the Public Procurement Act 2007 to provide for and adopt a local content policy and timely completion of procurement processes, disclosed that projects abandonment was mainly due to non-payment for interim certificates for work done.   He said if there must be efficient service delivery among the agencies of government involved in procurement and disposal of public assets, the Federal Government should merge the BPP; Bureau for Public Enterprise, BPE, and Infrastructure Concessi

Strike is not the only way out – Fayose appeals to Ekiti workers

Image
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, in a statewide broadcast , said the state only got the sum of N751million from the federation account for the month of April against the sum of N1.3b it got in March, hence the need for the striking Ekiti workers to shield their swords. He appealed to the workers to shelve the strike and look for a more pragmatic approach to resolve the crisis, saying ”strike is not the only way out.” “I know workers have not been coming to work, but I don’t have the moral right to stop them . But I can only deploy what I receive from the federation account. If workers want to go on strike, I sympathise with them, but we will be here waiting till when they come back. I can’t sell myself to pay workers. Even the government house where I live does not have diesel to power generator at times.   “I want the workers and members of the public to show understanding. This is not about Ekiti , it is an issue that affects all of us,”he said.

Lagos government to demolish structures under high-tension cables

Image
The Lagos State Government, LASG, has ordered owners of structures under high tension cables to remove them within seven days. Giving the warning in a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Anifowoshe Abiola, said, “The state Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2010, not only prohibits building under the centre-line of over-head electricity wires, it also in very clear terms specified the distance to be observed between a property and a public utility such as the PHCN high tension cables. “Building or conducting business under high tension power lines constitutes a danger that could have fatal consequences. “The required setback for buildings from the centre-line of over-head wires and horizontal distance between such buildings of not less than six

Stop outsourcing of refineries – Reps tell NNPC

The House of Representatives Committee on Privatisation has asked the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to suspend the proposed outsourcing of the nation’s three refineries in Kaduna, Warri and Port Harcourt. The legislature’s request came on a day oil prices approached the $50 per barrel target, rising as much as one per cent to above $49 per barrel after the United States reported a larger-than-expected drop in crude stocks for last week. Sadly, however, the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta, which has forced production down to 1.4mbpd, out of its allocated 2.2mbpd, has denied Nigeria the opportunity to benefit maximally from the rise in oil price. The House committee chaired by Hon. Ahmed Yerima (Bauchi APC) at its sitting wednesday accused the NNPC of acting unilaterally without consulting other stakeholders on its proposed outsourcing of the refineries, saying the NNPC had violated section 11 of the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) Act 2009. Although
