We have achieved a lot in Yobe despite challenges – Governor Gaidam

Image
Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State has revealed why his administration achieved so much despite the unrest in the state. He attributed the successes recorded so far to the adoption and application of sound economic and fiscal policies. Governor Gaidam, spoke at the opening of a two-day retreat for members of the State Executive Council, SEC, in Abuja.   The governor said the reforms implemented in conjunction with the United Kingdom-based Department for International Development, DfID, and the State Partnership for Accountability, Responsiveness and Capability, SPARC, had launched Yobe State into the league of prudent managers of public finance and good governance. The governor said: “The cumulative effect of these reforms in Public Finance Management is the high standards of accountability and prudence manifested in the ability of the State Government to remain above board and keep paying salaries, overhead costs and even service some capital projects at a time when

Al-Makura accuses cabinet members of sabotaging his government

The Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura has accused some members of his cabinet of deliberately sabotaging his government. The governor stated this at the Council Chamber, Government House, during an expanded emergency meeting with heads of boards, ministries and parastals. The meeting was attended by commissioners, special advisers, permanent secretaries, heads of tertiary institutions and directors of board and parastals.   Al-Makura said, “This meeting is special and unique. I believe that when we practise democracy, we should do it in a good form. We need to promote democracy by sensitising the public on governance. Some of you here go around giving different impression about governance. “Let us concentrate our attention on the unity, vision and objective for which the state was created.” The governor added, “Is that the call for the creation of Nasarawa State? Do we achieve the objective of creating Nasarawa State? What are we bringing towards the devel

INEC totally controlled by APC – PDP cries out

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has claimed that the nation’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is totally under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus cited the piecemeal release of results of the March 19 rerun election in Rivers State by the commission, which he alleged was done to satisfy the ruling party. The opposition party accused INEC of taking instructions from the ruling party on what to do with the outcome of the Rivers rerun, which he claimed his party won convincingly.   Secondus said, “It is apparent that the commission has become a department in the APC. The commission is being controlled by the APC. The commission has lost its independence and we have empirical evidence on this. “Now in Rivers, because the PDP won all the elections despite the intimidation by the military, the results are being releas

Even Ferguson, Mourinho will fail with Super Eagles – Amiesimaka

Image
Ex-international, Adokiye Amiesimaka, says the lack of quality players in the Super Eagles is responsible for the draw back the team has been experiencing in recent times. Amiesimaka, who was a member of the victorious Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 AFCON in Lagos, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday. The former winger added that the players lacked the finesse needed to play at the world stage compared to what was obtainable in the 1980s and 1990s.   “Sometimes one just gets bored you know talking about same thing; I have never seen any people as indulgent in wishful thinking as Nigerians. “We just don’t have the players; we don’t have the players; look at them individually; look at the quality; compare them to what we see every week in the (English) Premier League. “Compare (them) to what we see every week in La Liga; compare (them) to what we see every week in the Bundesliga; compare (them) to what we see ever

Nigerians will know details of budget in two weeks – National Assembly

Image
The National Assembly has assured that details of the 2016 budget would be ready in the next two weeks. Addressing a news conference yesterday in Abuja, the chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Rep Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano) said both the Senate and the House Committees on Appropriation were working to ensure this happened. “At the moment, we are working on the details of the budget. We’ll take a week or two to work on the details. We are doing the final harmonization. We are looking at the various reports of the committees,” he said.   He said that there was nothing abnormal about the delay in the details as it was done in the past. “We had instances where Obasanjo signed the budget without the details. Yar’Adua came and he preferred to see the details. So, if President Muhammadu Buhari prefers to see the details before assenting to the bill, I don’t think we should make a big deal out of it. It’s absolutely normal.” Reacting to the fact that the 201

Tinubu made the impossible happen by placing APC in power – Fashola

Image
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has extolled the virtues of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, saying he made the impossible happen by ensuring that an opposition became the ruling party for the first time in Nigeria’s history. Fashola stated this in a congratulatory message to Tinubu during the colloquium organised to mark the APC national leader’s 64th birthday in Abuja. According to the Minister, Tinubu steered the country away from the destruction the immediate past administration was dragging it into.   Fashola said, “It was dangerous for Nigeria to keep that administration for another term and the evidence of that was before us. The country was falling apart. You must salute the courage, the passion, the foresight of Asiwaju to reach across and say ‘let us forge a partnership to save Nigerians, to save ourselves’. “On whether or not there could be a merger, everyone said it wasn’t going to

Security agents block Shi’ites procession in Katsina

Image
Heavily armed security agents on Wednesday, halted a procession by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, in Katsina. Daily Trust reports that members of the sect had gathered at the Central Mosque area to begin the procession at about 8am when armed security personnel moved in to disperse them. The security agents then moved in a convoy round the main streets of the town.   The foiled Sayyada Zahara Maulud procession is an annual event by the movement to commemorate the birth of the prophet’s daughter, Fatima. The leader of the movement in Katsina, Shiek Yakubu Yahaya, recalled that about 10 vehicles full of armed security personnel arrived the venue, confiscating banners and flags of the sect which sent fears among followers. Confirming the development, Shiites’ spokesman, Ibrahim Musa, said on noticing the number of soldiers that surrounded the main Juma’at mosque where the procession was to take off, the movement relocated to prevent any confrontation.

Fuel scarcity: NYCN wants Buhari to resign as Petroleum Minister

Northern youths under the auspices of Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, (NYCN), have demanded the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari as petroleum minister to end persistent fuel crisis in the country. In a statement signed by President of NYCN, Isah Abubakar, copy of which was made available to DAILY POST in Kaduna on Monday, the group said Mr. President should resign as Petroleum Minister and appoint a substantive Minister of Petroleum resources for effective service delivery. The statement reads, “President Buhari should appoint a Group Managing Director for Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and relieve the minister of state for petroleum resources of double appointments.   “We realize that since Mr. President’s pronouncement of himself as Substantive Minister of Petroleum, the situation and availability of petroleum products especially that of premium motor spirit (PMS) in the market has become very scarce, indicating total failure on the part of Mr

Ali Adoyi: Why Buhari, Kachikwu, APC are not magicians

Recently, a video of Boko Haram terrorist leader, Abubakar Shekau surfaced on Youtube to the chagring of many who had thought that the militant leader was long gone after the Nigerian Army claimed victory over him in one of the raids it carried out deep in the Sambisa forest. His shocking appearance was, however, not much of news than his proclamation which signaled an end of his militancy. Shekau in the video said, “For me, the end has come.’’ Many have deduced that the militant leader has surrendered. This is likely so because of his body language and the reluctance with which he spoke. Equally so, was his statement of uncertainty where he said, ‘’only God knows the rest.’’ Who knows, he may commit suicide before the military he had constantly referred to as infidels take hold of him, an action that may be compared to that of Adolf Hitler. Whichever way one tries to look at his comment, it’s still conjecture for one to say he has surrendered. We can only analyze and pass our own j

Attacks on Communities: Senator Sani urges Fulanis to ensure ceasefire

Image
Worried about the incessant attacks allegedly carried out by herdsmen in some parts of the country, Senator representing Kaduna Central, Comrade Shehu Sani, has urged Fulani herdsmen across to have a rethink on their actions and avoid unnecessary attacks on communities. According to him, the situation where fulanis were fingered in Agatu and other parts of Nigeria was not only disturbing but had become a major national problem. He emphasised, “The problem is political, economical, ecological and social security problems that every Nigerian should be concerned about.”   The Senator, who expressed anger over what he termed, “the few Fulani people sending wrong message about the true nature of the typical Fulanis”, maintained that the Fulanis were peaceful, responsible and good people. “But I am very much concerned that the activities of few of them involved in violence has seriously demonised the ethnic group called the Fulanis,” he lamented. Addressing the Fulani community

Emulate late Tunji Braithwaite – Buhari tells politicians

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the immediate family, friends, professional colleagues and political allies of elder statesman and pro-democracy activist, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, who passed away on Monday. This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu. The President said that the passing away of the lawyer, author and politician came at a time that his wisdom, intellectual depth, vast knowledge and experience were sorely needed by the country.   President Buhari recalled the immeasurable contributions of the late sage to the development of democracy, rule of law and human rights in Nigeria. He, therefore, assured the late activist’s family and friends that the political history of the country would be incomplete without capturing his roles. The President urged political leaders to emulate the virtues of the founder of the Nigerian Advance Party (NAP) during

Fuel scarcity: NNPC shaken by Tinubu’s attack on Kachikwu, begs Nigerians

Image
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has reassured Nigerians of its commitment to end the persistent fuel scarcity in the country. This came few days after APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu, attacked Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, over what Tinubu called his non-challant attitude towards the feelings of Nigerians in view of the ongoing fuel scarcity. A statement signed by Mr Garba Deen Muhammed, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, on Monday in Abuja, said “we wish to re-assure Nigerians that we are on top of the petroleum products supply and distribution situation and we remain committed to eliminating this endemic issue once and for all within the next few days.”   “We genuinely empathize with the attendant sufferings and wish to reassure that we are focused and committed to bring an end to this situation within the next few days. “We kindly call on all Nigerians to partner with us on this journey to allowing the whole process

APC accuses Fayose of posing threat to national security

Image
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of conducting himself in a manner that threatens national security. It said the governor’s recent utterances and actions suggest acts of sabotage targeted at rendering national institutions ineffective to perform their statutory roles for effective government in a federal set-up. Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement on Sunday that Fayose’s unguided statements had exposed him as a man fighting a lone battle against the Federal Government over selfish motives to put millions of Nigerians in jeopardy of instability in an already tottering economy. Citing his death wish for President Muhammadu Buhari at a rally held at Fajuyi Square, Ado-Ekiti, to welcome the detained member of the House of Assembly, Akanni Afolabi, to the state capital, Olatunbosun regretted that besides the governor inciting Ekiti people against the operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS), he h

How Saraki, Dogara, deputies’ 400 aides earn same salaries as Perm Secs, Directors

There is disquiet in the National Assembly over the number of aides presiding officers have on payroll. Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and their deputies have hired over 400 aides, Daily Trust reports. Saraki is said to have over 112 aides, Dogara about 170, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has 60 while Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Suleiman Lasun has 58.   NASS management, it was gathered, had advised the presiding officers and their deputies to reduce their aides by at least 60 per cent to reduce cost. Saraki and Dogara were requested to cut down the numbers to 25 each while Ekweremadu and Lasun should have 17 each. The aides are in three categories – Special Advisers (SAs), Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants whose salaries range between N700, 000 to over a million naira monthly. The report has claimed that the special advisers earn about the same salaries as federal permanent secre

Agatu killings: IG deploys Mobile Police Units, more vehicles to troubled areas

Image
Following recent killings in nine Agatu Local Government Areas of Benue State, allegedly perpetrated by herdsmen, the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, after his visit to check the extent of damage, has deployed 2 Units of Police Mobile Force to the flash-points. The units will reinforce those already on ground, while additional Police operational vehicles have also been sent to the Benue Police Command for operational support. Police spokesperson, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, in a statement on Thursday said the Police, working in conjunction with the Benue Government, “will do everything within its powers to fish out and bring to book all those involved in this and other similar killings, stressing that an end must be put to this endless circle of impunity.”   Arase, while describing as regrettable, unprovoked and brutal killing of two Policemen who were on legitimate assignment in Agatu, warned that any person found to be involved in the killing would be made to bear

Government records N20.47bn drop in revenue

The Federation Account Allocation Committee on Tuesday said the country recorded a shortfall of N20.47bn in gross statutory revenue from N290.96bn in January to N270.49bn in February. The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, disclosed the shortfall while addressing journalists shortly after the FAAC meeting for the month of February. The meeting, which commenced at 7:13pm, lasted almost two hours. The minister attributed the decline in revenue to explosions at the Escravos oil exporting terminal as well as the force majeure declared at the Brass terminal, which led to the shut-down of pipelines at other terminals for repairs and maintenance. Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of finance, Mahmud Dutse, the minister also said a revenue loss of $45.9m, which was caused by the drop in the average price of a barrel of crude oil from $39.04 in December 2015 to $29.02 in January this year, had a negative impact on government revenue. She also blamed the de

The assurance is contained in a statement issued by the Head of Corporate Communications of PTAD, Theodora Amechi, made available in Abuja on Wednesday. The statement quoted Amechi as saying the assurance came during a meeting between the management of PTAD and representatives of the National Union of Pensioners (NUP), the National Association of Retired Paramilitary Officers (NARPO), the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON) and the Association of Public Service Retirees.   Amechi said that details of the payment of the 33 per cent arrears would be agreed upon with the various pension groups before payment. He reassured the unions’ representatives that the Federal Government recognised its obligation to pensioners and apologised

Brussels attack: FAAN tightens security at airports

Image
Following Tuesday’s terrorist attack on the Brussels Airport in Belgium, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has beefed up security in and around airports in the country. A statement by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, Mr Yakubu Dati, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Lagos. The statement, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that no fewer than 30 people were killed and many others injured when the departure hall of the airport was bombed by the terrorists.   It said that sniffer dogs had been deployed to airports in conjunction with the Nigerian Police and other security agencies. According to the statement, FAAN will not leave any stone unturned to ensure maximum security at the airports, especially with the Easter celebrations around the corner. It expressed shock over the dastardly act carried out at the Brussels airport, warning those without business at the airport not to constitute nuisance. The statement said

Image
Former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh just arrived the Federal High Court Abuja for continuation of his trial. Badeh is facing an 11-count charge ‎of‎ criminal breach of trust and corruption to the tune of N3.9bn levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.   The EFCC had alleged that the former military chief used funds of the Nigeria air force to purchase choice property in Abuja. According to the EFCC, Badeh illegally used N60m to renovate his son’s house, which he purchased for N260m in Abuja, between January and December 2013. False declaration of assets: Saraki denies secret communications with officials of Ministry of Justice

Image
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has denied reports that he has been exchanging calls with two senior officials of the Ministry of Justice in an attempt to alter some document that could help him escape indictment at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT. Saraki’s denial was contained in a petition dated March 17, 2016 to the Department of State Security, DSS, over a publication by an online news medium, regarding the secret phone calls. The Senate President is facing trial over his alleged false asset declaration while he was the Kwara State Governor.   A report recently surfaced alleging that Saraki exchanged phone calls with two senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Justice, one Mr. Taiwo Abijogun who is the Solicitor General of the Federation and one Mr. Diri who is to be the Director of Public Prosecution. Saraki in the petition he personally signed described the report as “another false, unsubstantiated and unwarranted report published against his person. Exp

Updated News: Senate passes N6.07 trillion 2016 budget

Following a motion by Senator Danjuma Goje on Wednesday for the passage of 2016 Appropriation of N6.07trillion and seconded by Senator Andy Uba, the Senate having been satisfied with sectorial explanations which show that the nation stands to benefit from the proposal, passed the budget into law. “That the Senate do consider the Report of the Committee on Appropriations on the 2016 Bill,” Goje urged.   DAILY POST reports that while elucidating on the budget, Goje admitted that the budget being the first to be presented by APC-led administration was fraught with irregularities which he described as strange. He pointed those irregularities to be late presentation by the Executive, inconsistencies by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, inadequacy of revenue to simulate the economy as well as omission on personnel cost. In his report, Goje recommended that the subsequent budget should be brought to the National Assembly by the Executive in strict compliance with the processes

Image
Report reaching DAILY POST has it that barring last minutes changes, the National Assembly will today pass the 2016 budget. This is coming following Tuesday’s suspension of debate on the budget. The Senate had adjourned midway into plenary due to the death of Baba Onwana, member representing Nasarawa/Toto federal constituency in the House of Representatives on Thursday last week.   Budget debate which was listed as item 3 on the Order Paper was laid by the Chairman, joint Committee on Appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje before the formal announcement of the demise of Hon. Goje on his part expressed firm belief that the 2016 budget would serve Nigerians, while urging Senators to consider it in the interest of Nigerians. “Mr. Senate President, Distinguished Colleagues, in accordance with the procedure of the Senate, the Senate do receive the Report of the Committee on Appropriations on the 2016 Appropriation Bill”, Goje noted.

National Assembly to present harmonised PIB next week

Tired of endlessly waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to send a new draft of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) to the National Assembly, the federal legislature has taken the bold step to independently initiate the bill towards its prompt passage. Against this background, the National Assembly had designed its own version of the bill ahead of the formal presentation of its harmonised version before each chamber of the National Assembly next week. Making this disclosure in his opening remark at a-one-day National Assembly Business Environment Roundtable held in the National Assembly yesterday, Senate President Bukola Saraki said both the Senate and House of Representatives had resolved to jointly re-draft the bill. “The National Assembly – the Senate and the House of Representatives – are working very closely together. As part of this commitment, we would all see next week when we lay down the PIB. You will see that the bill we are going to lay in each house is the same. We a
